Last Friday, my brain was still in a fever haze from the flu. I had the flu once before–sometime around 15 or 18 years ago. It was, as I recall, unpleasant–but I don’t remember it being quite so unpleasant. I had a fever for 8 days, for goodness sake.
Last Friday, I vaguely remember thinking about writing a post for Poetry Friday –I don’t remember thinking about it too much, though. I did watch a lot of Lucifer on Netflix. Most of the time, I didn’t even feel like reading.
Poetry Friday
And now it’s Friday again. I’m still feeling wiped out, but I’ve been fever-free for a few days and back to work, too.
This week, our host, Buffy Silverman, reviews a picture book, “One Black Bird.” It looks like a beauty! You can also go to her blog to see what other poets are writing about or to join in the fun.
My poem about the flu
I guess I’ve still got the flu blues
because this is the poem I had to write today. My creative juices aren’t flowing freely yet (are they ever? that’s a conversation for another day!) So much for my intention to write a haiku every day this month for #haikuforjustice and #haikuforkindness. I got off to a good start (as you can see in my post from 2 weeks ago on haiku for kindness and justice.
But then I crashed and burned. Maybe after I finish editing the book that’s due on Sunday, I’ll manage to end the month/year with a few more.
Anyhow, sorry for all the kvetching, there’s just a little bit more:
The Flu Blues
Boo-hoo
I have the flu
and a fever, too–
and I stink–PU!
It’s been a week,
I feel quite weak,
Past my peak
and rather bleak.
I’m getting better–
only wearing one sweater
But I want to unfetter
be an out-of-bed getter.
Patience is a virtue
But not this darn flu
Which I’m quite averse to
Boo-hoo, Boo-hoo.
That’s all for today!
Thankfully, I’m feeling much better. And now it’s winter break. I’m off to NYC in a few days to hang out with my amazing daughter, Gabrielle.
I wish you all happy solstice, happy Hannukah and joyful celebrations–and glorious good health.
Thanks for stopping by.
xoxo
Get well! I enjoyed your poem. Very descriptive of the flu experience! I’ve had a cold this last week but nothing like you’ve had. Happy Holidays to you and I hope you get back to your haikus soon.
Thanks, Janice. Happy holidays.
Glad you’re feeling better AND you got a fun poem out of the whole thing, so there’s that, too!!!
Always good to look for the silver lining!
oh, nooooo! Not the dreaded FLU! So sorry. I try to remember that what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger…but ugh. Living through flu is not fun at all. I’m glad you are on the mend and able to make light of that nasty business being down to only one sweater. I hope you enjoy the holidays in full health!
Thanks, Linda. I’m not feeling too strong yet, but I’m still kicking! But I’m hanging out with my daughter and that definitely makes me feel better!
Hope you’ve left the flu behind yu! Be well and warm! — Christie https://wonderingandwondering.wordpress.com/
Thanks, Christie, I feel much better. Hope you’re enjoying the holidays!
I especially like “be an out-of-bed getter.” I’m impressed by your creativity while sick — making a self-portrait is very clever. Your look of discomfort with a vague overlay of “what is this nonsense?” shines through.
Thanks, Tabatha. I think writing the poem helped me stop wallowing in self-pity– at least for a little while. And I had fun with the portrait, too.
