The bunnies’ tea party-a poem and illustration

bunnies' tea party

A couple of days ago, I walked out my front door and saw this, which made me think of a bunnies’ tea party:

Bunnies on the sidewalk

They just sat there without moving as I walked down the sidewalk. I stopped about 8 feet from them and took this photo. They didn’t seem to mind. Then I crossed the street to let them enjoy the cool morning and good company.

Bunnies’ Tea Party

And I’ve been thinking about those little rabbits ever since. They inspired me to write this silly little poem and create this –also silly–illustration:bunnies' tea party

Gossiping in sunshine

They sip their carrot tea

Munch on parsley cookies

Giggle with great glee.

Oh, what joy to see them

Lazing in the sun

Sister/brother bunnies

Together having fun.

I put my bunnies’ tea party bunnies in more or less the same poses as the real bunnies, but moved them around, put them in the grass instead of on the cement, and, of course, added the tea party and sun umbrella.

All in all, I enjoyed playing with the bunnies.

The last time I wrote about a rabbit, I did a poetry mashup with the white rabbit from Lewis Carroll and Dr. Seuss–about time.

I’ve been rewriting and making the fifth version of my picture book dummy for How to Spin a Golden Web this week. And it put me in the mood to make more art and to write more. Yahoo!!

Poetry Friday

And since it’s Poetry Friday, I threw in a poem, too. Mary Lee over at A Year of Reading hosts this week. She writes about poet Marilyn Chin–who I wasn’t familiar with, but am glad to meet. See what other poets have to say this Friday–and join in, if you want. The more the merrier!

In the meantime, I hope you have a wonderful week–and maybe a tea party, too!

As always, thanks for stopping by.

xoxo

  1. What fun, for the bunnies to inspire both art and poetry!

    1. Thanks–it’s funny how that image stayed with me all week. It really tickled me!

  2. I’ve had bunnies visit here most mornings. It’s funny how there are actually more in town than when we lived in the woods…maybe it’s the hawks, foxes, owls and coyotes we had in the woods…

    1. It could be–there are hawks around here, but no other predators. Plus, there are lots of lovely gardens!

  3. I’m amazed that the bunnies sat there for a photo. Your illustration and poem are so fun. Good luck with your picture book dummy and I’m glad you feel inspired to create more.
