Coming home-a moving tale (with a tail)

Almost 2 weeks ago I moved into my new home–and it feels like coming home!

It’s been just over a year since I said good-bye to my old blue table–the heart of my old home for many years–and moved to Colorado.

After living on my own for almost 2 years I have a roommate (a dear friend) and a roommate cat (Buddy). And I’m living in a house after living in an apartment or condo for the last 17ish years. After moving into smaller and smaller spaces, it’s nice to be able to stretch out and have enough room for everything. Although I have a lot less than I used to, and that’s awesome!

But the best thing about it is that it really feels like home–even still partly filled with boxes and with no art on the walls yet. Taking my books out of their boxes definitely helps. I never feel quite at home without them. But it’s something more than that.coming home to Buddy

Coming home–a poem

Quiet, comfortable, commodious

Laughter bounces off the walls

and into my heart.

What is home? How do we know we’ve arrived?

A feeling of rightness, of belonging.

Deep sleep at night (plus naps!)

Buddy the cat curled up on my rocking chair.

A pine tree where I can hang my chimes.

Another artistic soul to create with,

Laugh with, watch the news with.

Someone who, like me, always has cups–

teacups, water jars, fizzy water

scattered about in case of thirst.

And a fireplace–ok it’s gas-powered,

but I always dreamed of a home with a fireplace

And porch swings in the backyard–

like my grandma used to have.

But it’s more than that–

a feeling, nothing more and nothing less,

of coming home.

Poetry Friday and National Chocolate Chip Day!

In honor of National Chocolate Chip Day, here’s a link to my new favorite paleo microwave chocolate chip cookie recipe.

coming home--to dessert
This was my celebration of National Chocolate Chip Day!

It’s gluten-free, of course, and tastes really good (to me–but it’s been many years since I could eat a regular chocolate chip cookie). And I love that it makes only one! It just takes a few minutes, but the required effort keeps me from eating too many.

Thanks to Jama, at Jama’s Alphabet Soup, and her delightful post about chocolate chips, I found out about this special day. Check out her post and see what other poets are sharing, as well–or join in the fun!

  2. I love your repeating line: “But itโ€™s more than thatโ€“”. All those details help, too, but the feeling I’m sure is very real! Happy Homecoming!

  3. So happy to hear you’re settling in and feeling “at home” in your new place. That’s so important to feel you belong and will enjoy spending time in such a welcoming spot. What’s more important than feeling safe and secure and having good company?
