Welcome, Little One–Happy 2019!

Welcome, Little One-Poem and Painting

It’s 2019, a brand new year–Welcome, Little One!

Welcome, Little One–darling, sweet and innocent, 2019. You still have that new baby smell! I always get excited at the beginning of a new year. It feels like an opportunity for a fresh start. I don’t do resolutions, but I do spend a lot of time reflecting and journaling on the year that’s past and dreaming into the new year.

Welcome, little one
My father as a toddler–so cute! (He turns 91 next week)

I’ve just completed my first year post-teaching. It took most of 2018, but I finally feel like I’m settling into my new life–and I love it! As some of you know, the end of 2017 was a difficult time for me. I dedicated the beginning of 2018 to recovering from the stress of it, both physically and emotionally. But I’ve made it through–and I’m excited to see what 2019 holds.

And it’s Poetry Friday

As with all holiday weeks, I’ve been confused all week about what day it is. Even when I’m not working a regular job (I am working, though–spent 6 hours on my indexing today!), these holiday weeks throw me off. But my calendar assures me that today is, indeed Friday. And for the first Poetry Friday of the year, our lovely host is Sylvia from Poetry For Children. Check out her blog for a list of upcoming poetry books for young people and links to other Poetry Friday peeps.

Welcome, Little One–a poem

Last week, I shared a poem about old age to say good-bye to the old year

And today, as promised, I’m sharing a poem I wrote about babies.

Little one you come
As the poet said,
Trailing clouds of glory
Shimmer as you tread.

Laughing, crying, playing
With your sweet baby glow
I want to hold you close
But you must go, go, go.

You look round and rosy,
You smell juicy and sweet.
You are a new spring blossom,
A peachy, fuzzy treat.

You come into this world
With senses pure and true
And teach us all to see
Everything anew.

Curiosity and wonder.
This world, it must be known
Touch, feel, taste, smell,
Leave nothing you see alone.

Your body and this world
All belong to you.
For you, dear, all is one,
And it’s all you, you, you.

    1. Thanks, Carol. I don’t have grandbabies yet, but I’ve been blessed to spend lots of time with babies and new parents in my teaching (and my own long-ago babies, of course). They can teach us so much! Hope you get to see yours often!

  3. Your poem is a lovely welcoming into the New Year Susan! And I’m with you about reflecting more on the past and bringing that forward into our New Year! Love the pic of your dad and your girls. Happy New Year!

    1. Thanks, Michelle! Happy new year to you, too. I especially love that photo of my dad–it’s the only one I have from when he was a baby.
