Good-bye to another year

Good-bye 2018

I can’t believe it’s time to say good-bye to another year. I don’t remember them flying so quickly when I was younger. But these last 10 or 20 have flown by. In honor of saying good-bye to another year, I’ve dug out (and revised) a poem I wrote during my Waldorf teacher training. I don’t remember exactly what assignment we had, but it was something about writing something from the point of view of the end of life and from the beginning of life. To celebrate this year’s end, I’ve dug up the poem about the end of life–and that sense of time flying. Maybe I’ll share the one about the beginning of life next week to welcome the new year–or maybe I’ll share my Holy Nights haiku I’ve been writing.

Poetry Friday

The last Friday of the year has arrived–and the last Poetry Friday. Thanks to this weeks host, Mainely Write. I can’t wait to see what other poets have to say at the end of 2018. Check it out!

Good-Bye to Another Year

Below is my end of year, end of life poem. It’s an imagination, not a statement of where I’m at. I’m not there yet, although I have days…

Good-bye to another year--all is still and frozen
The end of the year–from a recent walk in Evanston

GOOD-BYE TO ANOTHER YEAR

From age’s great height,
Far can I see.
Look into my eyes
To see eternity.

My bones are fragile,
But my heart is young
As I end this journey
That’s just begun.

When I entered this world,
In my body I dressed.
Then through all my senses,
The world was impressed.

In my journey through life,
I’ve walked and I’ve run.
But now I prefer
To sit in the sun

For soon this old body
In cold earth will lie
And back to its home
My spirit will fly

Bearing fruits from seeds
In this lifetime sown,
My memories and wisdom
Are all that I’ll own.

But while life remains,
I’m glad you are here.
Through listening, we’ll learn
As we speak without fear.

Each moment is precious.
Though time’s feet run swift.
Our brief time together
is eternity’s gift.

How do you say good-bye to another year?

How are you saying good-bye to 2018? Are you glad to see it go? I am in some ways. But I’m sad in other ways. As Dr. Seuss said, “My goodness how the time has flewn–here’s my Dr. Seuss-white rabbit mash-up–with more thoughts about the passage of time.

good-bye to another year--it's flewn by!
My goodness how the time has flewn

Happy New Year!

I wish you the very happiest and healthiest of new year’s.

And as always, thanks for stopping by.

xoxo

  1. Loved your mash up of Seuss and Carroll!
I think the older we get the shorter the years appear to be as they are a smaller fraction of our lifetime than when we were a kid. When you have lived ONLY 5 years, one year is 20 percent of your life. When you are 60…well, it isn’t 20 percent of your life any more! That’s MY theory anyway. So I try to act 5 and see if I can extend the days any (so far it hasn’t worked – they still speed by)!

    1. I think you’re right about time going faster when we get older. I also like your theory about acting 5 to make the time slow down–even if they don’t go slower, the days will probably be more fun! Happy new year!

  2. The years do spin past at an alarming rate, don’t they? I love the juxtaposition of your poignant, thoughtful “Goodbye to Another Year” with your Dr. Seuss mash-up. The profound and the quirky — a winning combination!

    1. They seem to go faster and faster! Thanks for your observation–I love “profound and quirky;” sounds like how I want to live my life! Happy new year!

  3. I love your year’s end reflection poem, Susan, & I do love the Seuss, too. I have used it with students at the school year’s end. Happy New Year with all its permutations!

    1. Thanks, Linda. That Seuss poem is a favorite of mine. Happy and healthy new year–can’t wait to see what’s coming!

  4. This is a wonderful photo and reflection poem. Like you, I find myself a ball of emotions at the end of a year. May this new year bring you the gift of time and many blessings to ponder.

    1. Thanks, Keisha. This has been a particularly eventful year for me and seems to be bringing up even more than the usual end of year feelings. But it’s been a good year in very many ways. Thanks for your new year wishes–I wish you a happy, healthy new year full of blessings and wonder.

  5. Both perfect contributions to our end of year wrap up. I’ll tuck away the mashup for my Kindergarten poets!
Your end of year piece fits well with both human life as well as other living things, I believe.
    Happy New Year!

    1. Thanks, Christie–after 16 years as a pre-school teacher, I think some of that kindergarten spirit stuck!
Happy New Year to you, too.

  6. These final days of the year do inspire introspection, don’t they? Happy New Year!

    1. They do, indeed! And perhaps a little wistfulness, too. Happy New Year!

  7. Love the mash-up Dr. Seuss poem Susan, and yes our time goes way too quickly. I’m with Donna, for trying to slow it down a bit by acting like we are 5. Hope you have a joy filled New Year!

    1. Thanks, Michelle! I think Donna had a great idea. The happiest of new years to you!

  8. Happy New Year, Susan. Sitting in the sun is an important goal — that was my favorite moment in your poem. Thanks for sharing the icicles photo too.

    1. I’m really aware of the sun- or lack of it- this time of year in Chicago. But the ice by the lake is magical.

Happy new year to you, too!

  9. I’m always nostalgic for family who have passed away at this time of year and your beautiful poem makes me miss them even more. Thank you for including the fun Dr. Seuss/White Rabbit mash-up. It describes my life perfectly, and brought a smile to my face. Happy New Year!

    1. Thanks, Catherine. Happy new year to you, too!

  10. Love your poem Susan, and I love this time of reflection. Your icicle tree photo is wonderful – a perfect reminder for me that even though time seems to be speeding along at ever-increasing rates there is always room for the beauty of stillness in our lives. Wishing you a wonderful and magical 2019.
