The first snow of the season! in haiku

First snow

Waking up to snow!

I woke up this morning to the first snow of the season. Big fluffy flakes falling down–and not sticking to much. Although when I went out mid-day, there was still snow stuck to my sideview mirrors.

I do love snow. I’m not a skier or anything. I just think it’s pretty. And the world seems quieter when the snow is falling. I could feel the peacefulness this morning when I woke up before I even saw the flakes. Of course, I did see the weather forecast that predicted snow, so I knew it was likely. But my friend who lives a little west of here got rain instead of snow.

I like snow best in the city when it doesn’t stick around for too long. At least in the city, it tends to get gray/brown and ugly pretty quickly. Plus parking–even worse when there’s snow.

A haiku for the first snow!

But I enjoyed it today–tried to take a photo through the window. And I wrote this haiku in honor of Poetry Friday.

First Snow

Snow dusts the rooftops

Scraggly feathers of sun

Tickle it away.

Today’s Poetry Friday is hosted by Today’s Little Ditty and you can follow that link to see who else has posted poetry today-or to join in if you want.

I’ve been having so much fun these past few weeks posting and seeing what other people post for Poetry Friday. I love these blog hops–they give me incentive to post something.

Last week I posted a household hint poem about cleaning the stovetop.

And I have a shiny stovetop to prove it. (Well, actually, it’s time to clean it again)

Thank you, as always, for stopping by. I’d love to hear from you. Do you like snow?

  1. sNOOOOOOOw! Well, OK, if it’s YOUR snow. I’ve yet to visit Chicago. But, It’s on my list. I really do enjoy your photo through the window. The brick and the dark browns in that beautiful sepia color remind me of days gone by and rich history poems. I hope you have a productive writing week!

    1. Thanks–it was hard to actually get a photo where you could see the snow. But it did make me long for a more peaceful view from the window.
I hope you have a productive writing week, too.

  2. Your view is quite different from mine, but we both share recent snows. I agree with you that the peace of a snowfall is something to be celebrated, and I love the idea of the sun tickling away that snow. Nice!

    1. Thanks, Molly! I love Maine–I’ve only spent a few weeks there, but they were wonderful. There was no snow, though–I was there in the summer. I did experience my first (and only, so far) hurricane, though!

  3. It’s the right time to be reading your post, Susan because it’s snowing here in Denver this morning. I love your haiku and hope the sun will “tickle it away” later here, too.

    1. Hi Linda,
I think you probably get more snow in Denver than we do in Chicago, but I it’s gone by now. I love to watch the snow fall, but I don’t always enjoy going out in it (but sometimes I do!).

  4. Yea! Another snow lover! We had our first snow, too, this week–just a scattering of white when I woke up. And I wrote a haiku to honor the occasion, too.

    1. Hi Kay,
Haiku is such a great format for celebrating the natural world! And I still feel like a kid when it snows–except when I have to drive in it.

  5. Very fresh description! I haven’t heard of sunlight being described as “scraggly feathers” before!

    1. The sun was barely there–but it was just enough to get rid of the snow–actually it probably just warmed up a little and melted, but that’s no fun!

  6. […] in case you’re in the mood for more haiku, here’s one I wrote for the first snow of the season a while […]
