Kniphofia/Red Hot Poker Plant–#AtoZChallenge

kniphofia
Here’s the flower for today, Kniphofia, also known as Red Hot Poker Plant–which is how I know it–or Torch Lily, another great name. I’ve never grown it, but I’ve seen it, but I don’t remember where.  It’s native to South Africa, grows from bulbs and is irresistible to hummingbirds, butterflies and artists (or at least this artist).  They’re big flowers, growing to about four feet tall and come in lots of bright colors.  And that’s all I know about Kniphofia, except that it was named after a German botanist, Dr. Kniphof, and there’s a variety called kniphofia mermaiden.
I got a reprieve of sorts today.  I was supposed to have gum surgery today, but the decay had gotten worse, so now I get to have a root canal instead.
But at least it’s Spring Break!  Hooray–time for me to rest and play!

  1. I can always remember the front garden of my family home filled with red hot pokers.
In recent years, I haven’t seen too many though… maybe due to the lack of rain and the fact that my mom is now an octogenarian and doesn’t tend to the garden like she used to.
