Creativity in motion–the story of the spider and the antelope

One day, Spider was busy spinning her web. She loved to spin–the feeling of the silk from her body forming intricate patterns in the light and the air. But she was not the only one enjoying her act of creation, for antelope had stopped to watch her spinning.

Now is the time for action!

At first, she did not notice him watching, for he stood so still, but soon she felt his eyes on her. She looked at him and smiled. He smiled in return. “I have come to take you to your new home,” said Antelope.

“I didn’t know I needed a new home. I have lived here since I blew here when I was a tiny spider. I am quite content. All I need comes here to me. I spin and weave my world. I weave the letters that make the words that make the world.”

“Nonetheless,it is time for you to move, and so I am here to help you move. I long for your company. You can ride on my head and spin a web between my antlers, if you wish. I will walk slowly so you can ride in comfort.”

So Spider climbed onto Antelope’s head, for truth be told, she longed for his company, as well.

The woods were quiet as they strolled along, and  spider spun a web between antelope’s horns, humming as she wove. She enjoyed the breeze blowing and the changing colors and smells. Antelope enjoyed Spider’s light, tickly movements and the soft sound of her humming.

They came to a stream. Antelope stooped his head to drink and spider saw the water. She was amazed by the blue sparkliness of it. She watched the ripples as Antelope drank.

“Antelope,” she said, “I would like to live here. This is the most beautiful place I have ever seen.”

“I know just where you can make your home,” Antelope replied.

He took her to the opening of a small cave that looked over the water. “This is where I come when I need shelter.”

Spider climbed from his antlers onto the side of the cave’s opening. She was fuilled with joy. Here she could veave her web and see the blue shimmering water. She would see her friend Antelope, too.

Antelope said, “I have very much enjoyed your company, but now my legs tell me it is time to run. Goodbye, friend, for now.”

Spider watched him leap across the stream and run. When he ran, his limbs flowed like the water. Soon he was out of sight and she set to weaving her web. The buzzing of insects told her that there would be abundance for her here, and friendship and beauty, too.
Well, I felt the need to write a story about the antelope and the spider. In the medicine cards by Sams and Carson, the antelope represents knowedgeable action and spider represents creativity. What happens when these two meet? Maybe a blog–maybe something pretty exciting.

I am off to Boulder to finish my puppetry training with Suzanne Down
I’ll be back in two weeks with some new stories.
Until then…..
