K is for (arm) Knitting

I just got a new book, or should I say blook (not only because it has the letter
k, but because I just learned this word–a book based on content from a blogIMG_0922
Which came from the blog Flax and Twine.  I was excited to give it a try.  I learned to finger knit way back when I was in a parent-child class at the Chicago Waldorf School with my daughter, Gabi.  She was three at the time (she’s twenty-one now).  I also learned to knit in this class.  Since then, I’ve taught knitting, both the finger kind and the needle kind, in my parent child classes.  I’m not a great knitter, but I know the basics.  Anyhow, this just looked like too much fun.  And I had some pencil roving I bought on e-bay a long time ago that needed a project.

This is only part of it–I need a few more projects!

And I decided to start with something easy, so I made this cowl:

It only took about an hour to make, even with helpIMG_0915
although winding the roving into balls took almost that long, too.

This is after I cast on (sorry it’s so dark)

I didn’t take any other photos while I was working on it because, well because I was rather tied up (ha-ha).
It was fun and fast!  I’ll definitely do it again.  I have some yarn I spun that I might try this with.  If I do, I’ll post an update with photos.  If you want to try it, here are some arm knitting tutorials.
Don’t forget to check out the A to Z blogging challenge.  I’ve found lots of interesting new blogs from the hopping part of it.
As always, thanks for stopping by!

  1. You not only wrote about it, you actually did the knitting. Great job.

    1. Thanks–it was fun!

  2. I’ve never tried any kind of knitting. I tried crochet a long time ago, but I only learned how to do a single strand, lol. Arm knitting looks like something fun I could try in the future. BTW, thanks for commenting on my blog. 🙂

    1. It is pretty easy–finger knitting is even easier and there’s lots of great tutorials on-line if you don’t have someone around who can show you. On, and you’re welcome for the comment–thank you, as well.

  3. I love knitting and haven’t done any for AGES – actually, about 23 years! I do long to do things creative with my hands, but all my creativity goes on writing nowadays. I did think… and really should I say this? But it looks like you’ve a sense of humour – I did think when I saw you in your new scarf – did you knit your hair as well? Because it is so wonderfully patterned! Gosh, how rude *covers face*. Do forgive me. Ahem.

    1. That’s very funny–about the hair. The post I’ll be doing this evening will be more on that theme! The nice thing about knitting – and other handwork , too, is that if you do decide to take it up again, it will probably come back quickly. Muscle memory is a wonderful thing. Thanks for your comment.

  4. I was looking for blookup and found your blog. Very interesting. I’m not very good at needle knitting so this sounds like it would be fun to try. My blog has become an e-book, but was a print book first and then updated with research in the health field.

    1. It is fun and easier than knitting with needles–and a lot faster. Congratulations on you blook–looks interesting.
