In my Parent-Child classes, I have been using my Wee Willie Winkie puppet to tell a little story. The children love him. A couple of weeks ago, a little mouse came to visit Willie. I made him from a felted cashmere sweater, which I then stitched and added little wool felt ears and sewn eyes and whiskers. I had all of the parents make them. I always cut everything out ahead of time, although I am not the best cutter, and I also thread the needles–I have learned over the years that it can be so hard to thread a needle with a one or two year old helping that many of the parents don’t get past threading the needle to get to the actual snowing. This turned out to be a great first sewing project. Almost everyone completed it in one class, even though I thought it would take 2 weeks. This inspired me to come up with another project which I will post next–yarn pumpkins inspired by the Magic Onions website.
Here are some of the cut out pieces. We made over 40 mice from one felted sweater. The sweater material gets folded in half and stitched down the back, remembering to leave the back open for your finger to go in. Here is a close up of the finished mouse.
I used a blanket stitch to sew up the back, but others used a whip stitch. One dad sewed two of the mouse pieces onto a finished mouse to make a bat–it was awfully cute!
