Catching rainbows–that’s what I feel like I’m doing when I paint and when I dye yarn. Of course, sometimes I catch them with my camera, too. Lately, I’ve been dying a lot of yarn. At the end of this post, you’ll find a coupon for my hand-dyed yarn–or anything else in my ETSY shop–good for the month of June 2019.
The beauty of rainbows
I love seeing rainbows–I still get excited when I see one. But I noticed that a lot of songs about rainbows are sad (Like Judy Garland singing “I’m always chasing rainbows.”)
The songs tell of storms and dark clouds, but the amazing thing about rainbows is that they aren’t just about rain, they happen when the sun and rain come at the same time–things that don’t usually meet. The coming together of light and dark produces those wonderful colors–that’s basically Goethe’s color theory, that color comes from the intermingling of dark and light.
Why I like catching rainbows
If you’ve looked around my blog at all, you can see that I love color. It’s easier for me to capture shapes with color than with black and white. Mostly, I like to play with color–in paint, in fiber, in my home, in my food, in my clothes–well, basically everywhere. And I definitely dream in color!
I suppose that doesn’t say why. And I guess I don’t really know; I just know that color is an integral part of who I am. I’m adding it to my list of whimsical names for myself–rainbow catcher. (Wondermonger is another one).
Iris-the rainbow goddess
The irises have been blooming like crazy around here lately. And I’ve been thinking about their beautiful colors and textures, as well as the Greek goddess. Not only is she the goddess of the rainbow, but she’s also the messenger of the gods. That fits, doesn’t it–the divine speaks to us through color.
The chakras and the rainbow
The seven main chakras also have associations with the colors of the rainbow. I share a rainbow chakra meditation, with a little info about chakras here
But back to dying yarn
I dyed a bunch of yarn yesterday and thought I’d share some photos of the process. I dyed some in a steamer and the rest in the oven, all using acid dyes. Most of it will be for sale in my ETSY shop in the next day or so.
