By heart light and candlelight: inspiration for tough times

I came across this quote about candlelight and heart light this morning as I read The Book of Candlelight by Ellery Adams. Since I had just shared a video and some songs about candle lighting rituals with little ones in my DIY parent-child class, I think it especially hit home for me.

Heart light by candlelight

There’s something magical about candlelight–and I need that magic right now. When I was teaching, we always lit a candle at snack time. A simple ritual that brought comfort as well as light. Comfort and light.

Jan over at Bookseed Studio hosts Poetry Friday today. Check out her post about Amanda Gorman, our national youth poet laureate, and her upcoming books–and more! In honor of Amanda’s upcoming picture book, Change Sings, Jan offered us an optional prompt of music.

So here is more wonderful heart light by Amanda Gorman performing with MILCK from The National Day of Racial Healing 2021. They perform at 21:45–I haven’t watched the rest, but I love the combination of music and poetry from these 2 inspiring women.

And a few last thoughts

I’ve been working a ton lately. Editing, writing, creating my new class. And I didn’t have a poem of my own to share today.

I have been doing some handwork. Two weeks ago (I think), I shared some of my recent work in my post “I feel like I’m living in my very own time zone.” I did manage to get my daughter Gabi’s birthday present to her before her birthday which is next Friday. I won’t share the painting I made for her yet–not until she sees it. I’m hopeful that I’ll get Rachel–my other daughter–her birthday present in time for her birthday at the far end of February.

Here’s my new cowl/hat made from hand-dyed hand-spun yarn. It’s so much fun to change it from a hat to a cowl and back again.

And after almost exactly one year, I finally decided that I had to cut my own hair–since I have no idea when I’ll feel safe going to a hair salon again. I found a YouTube video for cutting your own curly hair, borrowed my roommate’s hair scissors, and went for it. You can see the before look in the cowl photo above. Here’s the after. It’s not perfect, but it’s at least 250% better than it was before!

My haircut! I feel so brave!!

Ok–that’s all for today! Thanks for stopping by!!

Wishing you a week filled with heart light and candlelight.

xoxo

  4. Hey, nice haircut! You even got all the strands–even! I love your play with candlelight. It IS magical…even a little bit. Kudos to you for knitting after dying and weaving. Yikes. How on earth do mere mortals keep up with you? It’s good that you teach preschool. Only that age can have the energy required.
