A shiny stovetop and another household hint poem for Poetry Friday

my shiny stovetop

As you can see, I now have a shiny stovetop. You can see in the before photo that it wasn’t terrible before (at least not by my standards!). But I couldn’t figure out how to get a shiny stovetop no matter how much I sprayed and rubbed and wiped. So I did a google search and found these instructions on how to clean a greasy stovetop from Kitchn.

My stovetop before it was shiny

And then I wrote a poem about it:

The Shiny Stovetop Cleaning Poem

Easy, peasy, lemon squeezy,

Washing your stovetop can be easy.

First remove the grates and knobs;

In soapy water let them bob.

Drip some soap upon your sponge;

Grease and dirt you can expunge.

Wipe and rinse until the grime is gone

If you want, you can sing a song.*

When all is clean, wipe with a towel

Wipe and buff, but do not scowl.**

Wash the knobs and scrub the grates;

Gently return them to their place.

Now your stove is shiny and clean

Ready to  get all greasy again.

Poetry first, cleaning second

After I wrote the poem–the next day, in fact, I tried out this method of cleaning. The instructions said to drip dishsoap on a sponge or cloth and then run it under water before wiping–and to repeat until it’s clean.

Then you rub with a dry dish towel. I did it –and it worked! The shiny stovetop–hurray! I don’t know why I didn’t know how to do that, but I didn’t. And now I do. Praise to the internet (and to the folks at Kitchn!). That’s something that’s bugged me for a long time, but not enough to do anything about it until this week.

It’s Poetry Friday

And I think I was inspired by Poetry Friday. I wanted something to write a poem about, and Shiny Stovetop is what I came up with. I know–it’s pretty silly, but that’s how I roll these days.

And that’s it for me this week. I’m off to look at my reflection on the top of my stove.
