Yarrow–#AtoZChallenge

yarrow
Here is yarrow.  I have grown yarrow in my yard before.  I love the tiny little sub-flowers and the lacy whitish-green leaves.  It is also a member of the sunflower family.
Yarrow is an herb. The leaves and flowers are used to make a tea or tincture that is good for fevers and colds, as well as gastrointestinal disturbances.  It is also used topically for wound healing and some people chew the fresh leaves to relieve toothaches.
Yarrow is also the herb that Achilles painted himself with to make himself invulnerable to arrows.  He painted every part of his body except his heels.
I went to an amazing SCBWI conference today–Spring Thaw Pitch Perfect.  I went to an intensive on picture books with Tom Lichtenfeld, the wonderful illustrator and writer–Stick and Stone is one of the  more recent books he illustrated–he also illustrated Good Night, Good Night, Construction Site.  I love both these books!  The children in my class do, too.  He shared with us his process, from idea to publication.  It was fascinating and I learned a lot.
I was also in a pitchfest with Kelly Barrales-Saylor of Sourcebooks, Inc. and some other wonderful authors.  Her feedback was insightful, direct and kind.  It was my first in person pitch.  I decided instead of getting nervous to just have fun.  And it worked.
What a great day!  But now I’m tired, and I really didn’t feel like painting, but I did anyway because tomorrow’s the last day.
