I went for a walk this Christmas day just at dusk. I wanted to collect some sticks to add to my shield, to give it some solidity. I know many places are quiet today–people at home with family and friends, staying warm, celebrating. But in my neighborhood, things are bustling. I live in a part of Chicago where there are many Indian and Pakistani restaurants and stores. It looked like they were all open and busy. I don’t know why I always feel self conscious when I go out to collect sticks or leaves or other bits of nature in my very urban neighborhood, but I do. But I do it anyway.
This shield is the final project in the online spinning class, The Journey to the Golden Fleece. It has been a wonderful journey–full of spinning and creativity and getting past various degrees of stuckness. Especially on this last project. But I finally got it to where I wanted it. I like the combination of wool and sparkly things. I also like the solidity of the wood with the softness of the wool. It didn’t come out the way I was expecting it to. But I realize that nothing ever does. And that’s fine. In fact, it’s good. Life (and my new shield) is more interesting and messy and scary and fun than I ever imagined it would be.
I am about to enjoy Indian take out with my family. Finishing this project was my gift to myself.
Enjoy your journey!
