May Apple–#AtoZChallenge

mayapple
My flower for today is the May Apple.  May Apples have only two leaves and one flower.  For me they bring back happy memories.  My family moved to Rock Island, Illinois when I was seven years old.  We moved into a redwood house on a street that ended in a court.  At the end of the court lived a family with 6 daughters–Becky, Missy, Claudia, Krista, Belinda and Ginny.  Krista was my age.  I played with her and Belinda and Ginny.
There was a ravine behind our houses–big hills with lots of trees.  In the spring, we would go into the woods to look for May Apples.  I remember being amazed the first time they showed them to me.  We had to lift up the leaves to find the flowers.  It was so exciting to see those little white flowers.  To me, it meant that spring had really arrived.
They grow little fruits, but I don’t remember ever looking for those.  I remember those lovely cool spring days in the woods with the ground all mushy from the spring rains looking for those little flowers.
I went with them to look for morel mushrooms (another double M!) in the spring.  They knew where to look.  I remember finding those magical looking mushrooms and taking them back to their house.  Their Mom cooked them in butter.  The smell was heavenly.  My mom had told me not to eat them.  She was afraid of me eating wild mushrooms–although I doubt she realized how distinctive looking they were.   So I watched my friends eat the mushrooms.  Just in the last few years, I’ve seen them occasionally at the market for an exorbitant price.
I love the spring!

  1. It’s amazing how little things, such as a flower, can bring back childhood memories. I can’t smell lilacs without thinking of my childhood home where lilac trees were everywhere. The smell always makes me smile.
