My flower for today is the orchid.  When I went, almost 2 years ago, to Monteverde, Costa Rica, I visited the Orchid Garden there (Jardín de Orquídeas).  We saw many amazing orchids there–so different from the ones they sell here in flower shops or grocery stores.  This painting, for which I used photoshop’s watercolor and pencil, was inspired by this orchid which I photographed–along with many others.100_3885.JPG

We had a private tour guide who armed us with magnifying glasses and explained all about the multitudes of orchids that grow in the wild.  It was beautiful and amazing.

As I go through this blog challenge, it surprises me how many happy memories I have that are associated with flowers.

Thanks for stopping by to smell the flowers (did you know some orchids smell like animal flesh?)

I am a writer, handworker, artist and teacher (a WHAT!), and a mom of two beautiful daughters who are amazingly 17 and 21. I am working on getting my first book, a fantasy novel for young people, published and am busy spinning on my new spinning wheel. I have been a Waldorf early childhood teacher for 10 years now, and before that, I was a lawyer. Teaching is much more fun.

  1. We visited the conservatory at the Biltmore Estate in NC and they had some orchids that I wouldn’t have recognized as orchids too. The variety is mind boggling. Nice rendition, and a lovely theme.

    • Thank you! I hope it’s sweet perfume, not meaty. I did get to smell one orchid that smelled like chicken. Very strange, but I guess it attracted whoever it needed for pollination.
