First Draft #44–Rainbow Land: Golden Fairy

Rainbow Land—the golden fairy

 

Oh lovely rainbow, see it span,

So lovely shining over the land

You are so red, gold, green and blue,

I’d like to climb it now with you.

Let’s climb the rainbow together.  Mind your step, it’s slippery.  We’re almost there—just a little bit further.

Ah, here we are, dear children.  Welcome to Rainbow Land!

Here are Queen Cloudia and King Shine waiting to greet us.

“Good morning, your majesties, thank you for letting us visit.”

“You are most welcome here in rainbow land,” says King Shine.

“But you must remember that our rainbow fairies are shy,” says Queen Cloudia. “So please be quiet as quiet can be.  That is the only way to find the magic in our land.”

“Yes, indeed, my dear.” King Shine takes her hand.  “But we must be off.  Please follow behind.”

“Of course, but where are we going?”

“To visit Golden fairy.  Take my hand and then we can fly, so much quicker than ground travel, and more fun, too.”

“Golden fairy loves the sun and sunflowers, too, and butterflies.  Why, now that I think on it, she loves all things gold,” explains Queen Cloudia.

“Goldie, Goldie” calls the King.  “Where are you?”

Goldie is very busy.  She’s here and there and everywhere.  She touches every tree and flower with her golden brush and then moves on, just like a ray of the golden sun.

Here she comes in her dress of gold—it’s very shiny with tiny golden bells at the hem and her golden hair sparkles in the sun.  Listen, you can hear the little bells singing when she moves.

Look she’s offering us her golden rope.  Hold on, children, and off we go.  First up to the sun, where she dips her brush in golden light and then back down to earth.  Here she touches a sunflower, there a yellow butterfly, there the golden hair of a baby.  See how they all shine where she touches them?

Now back to the sun.  Look, she’s filling a pot with golden sunshine for us.  Hold on to the golden cord.  We’ll take the sunshine back with us and see if we can paint some golden sunshine.

The End

This is a story I’m working on to use as a painting story in my classroom.  The story will continue throughout the year with all the different colors of fairies and various adventures.

In Waldorf Early Childhood classrooms, we do wet on wet watercolor painting with the children–the paper is soaked in water and the colors are also pretty watery.  This way, the children get an experience of the color moving, of moving the color over the paper.  As the children get older, they often start to shape the color into form, but the littler ones are happy just moving the paint around.  We start with a single color–gold (yellow, really) because it’s still golden summer at the beginning of the year, then we’ll move on to red, for fall, and then red and yellow together.  Eventually, we’ll use 3 colors together and from that, any color is possible!

If you’ve never tried painting like this, give it a try–allow yourself to feel the flow of the color.  I find it very meditative.
